Meet Hazel
Meet Hazel, a critically endangered ringtail possum. Hazel's journey with us began in September 2022, and she has undoubtedly earned her own meet-and-greet page.
Hazel's Arrival
Hazel came to us after being in the care of another dedicated carer. Unfortunately, due to the presence of a few very territorial ringtail possums in the area, it was not possible to release her there. We were more than happy to welcome Hazel into our care, knowing that we had the responsibility to prepare her for a safe and successful return to the wild.
From the moment Hazel arrived, she stole our hearts with her adorable nature and love for cuddles. Her gentle demeanor and affectionate personality made it incredibly tough to remind ourselves that our ultimate goal was to "de-humanize" her for release. Over the six months she spent with us, Hazel became a cherished member of our wildlife family.
Release Day February 2023
Hazel's journey with us was not without its challenges. As much as we adored her, we knew it was our job to help her reconnect with her wild instincts and get ready for life back in her natural habitat. The process was tough, but we were determined to ensure she would thrive once released.
After six months of care, training, and preparation, the day of Hazel's release finally arrived. It was a bittersweet moment as we said goodbye to our beloved ringtail possum. We must have done a good job, because she left on her release day and we never saw her again. While we miss her dearly, we take comfort in knowing that Hazel is back where she belongs, living her life as a wild possum.
The Importance of Wildlife Rehabilitation
Hazel's story is a testament to the importance of wildlife rehabilitation and the dedication of carers who work tirelessly to give animals like Hazel a second chance. Every effort we make to protect and nurture these precious creatures contributes to the conservation of critically endangered species.
We hope Hazel's story inspires you to learn more about wildlife conservation and the incredible work being done to protect our native species. Thank you for being a part of Hazel's journey and for your continued support of our mission.
