Meet Lily & Poppy
Lily and Poppy came to Amaris Wildlife Sanctuary, to continue their journey to become wild girls before eventually moving to Karlup Animal Sanctuary as their final step. Little did I know then how they would settle deep into my heart. At 6 and 7 kg they were such a joy and such distinctive personalities but closely bonded. Their carer (Mummy) wanted them to come here as she knew they would be spoiled. Lily was hilarious at bottle time, knowing exactly how many drops were in her bottle, and she wasn’t going to miss a single one. After reaching the 8kg requirement for the final destination they were moved to Karlup were Lily’s antics with her milk bottle continued. No point trying to hide the spare bottle, she knew exactly where it was and when she finally mastered the milk bar she was in joey heaven as she finished every last drop in every bottle. They were released 3 months ago and are now free to roam the 10,000 acres of bush reserve adjoining Karlup. Here is a brief recap on how they came into care.
Lily’s Leap: From Struggle to Strength
Late one night, a tiny kangaroo joey named Lily was found weighing just 200 grams, clinging to life in her mother’s pouch after a tragic accident. Her mother, struck by a car, held on just long enough for a kind-hearted driver to bring her to the vet. Sadly, Lily's mother passed away, but the joey was still attached to the teat.
Carole Gamsby a carer with Wildlife WA gently detached Lily, who initially lost weight, dropping to 180 grams. Under Carole’s care, Lily began to thrive and eventually reached 7kg. Lily’s journey highlights the resilience of life and the dedication of those who care for her.
Poppy’s Second Chance
Poppy was found after 3 days in her dead mother's pouch. She arrived Lyn Manuel home, ar 825 grams, not breathing and no discernable heart beat. Mucus membranes white and body temp really cold. Poppy was rubbed and immersed in warm water then mouth to mouth which included her whole nose and mouth in Lynn's and heart pumping the same as would do for an infant. Then filled up sink with warm water again. Repeat and repeat for 45 minutes. She slowly stated to move a leg which gave them hope to keep going. She was vet checked on a regular basis and she reached all her milestones on time.
Poppy became a sister to Lily. Regular vet checks ensured she met milestones,
