Meet Mia

Mia came into my care on August 17, 2019, as a tiny 400-gram pinkie. She was initially named Bruisetta because of the terrible bruising on her head. Her very experienced rescuer was amazed that she was still alive. Jane, another experienced carer, messaged me and told me she had a baby for me. I had never successfully cared for a pinkie before, but Jane was adamant that 2019 would be the year for me.

At that time, I had been seriously ill for a couple of months and, upon returning home, was told not to lift anything heavier than 2kg or do any work at all. Jane saw the perfect opportunity to deliver this little 500-gram pinkie to me, trusting that I could care for her.

I renamed her Mia, which means 'Beloved' and 'Wished for,' and it was love at first sight. She required a lot of special care, love, and time, which I had plenty to give. Three-hour round-the-clock feeds began, and I had to ensure her temperature remained stable, as she overheated quickly. Mia was never out of my sight, and I loved being her human Mummy.

I needed this precious girl as much as she needed me. Together, we bonded, and she thrived. As I recovered, Mia showed incredible determination to recover and fight for her little life.

May 2020

Little Mia struggled for months with diarrhea, which can be fatal for one so young. She lost weight, then gained some, only to lose it again. The joy in her eyes faded, and every day I woke up to find her still alive, I thanked God for sparing her precious little life. We tried countless remedies, but we knew we had turned the corner the day she started eating dirt. Phew, we did it, thanks to the many people who offered help and advice. What joy it was for me to see the sparkle return to her eyes and the zest for living return to her little body.

As always, joeys need a special friend, so we welcomed Merci into our family. These two little mischief-makers doubled the love and cuddles, bringing endless joy to our lives.

Mia has stolen the hearts of many who have come into contact with her, but one person in particular calls her 'my girl.' While there are no favorites in our home, this little bub at 2.9 kg is Peggy's sweetheart. She has been nicknamed as Mumma’s Mia.

Today, Mia is happiest when hooning around the property with her BFF Merci and most content when snuggled in my arms.

UPDATE: We also welcomed Marnie, Maisie, Millie, and Micah to join Mia and Merci. Life was full of love, mischief, dirty bags, and bottles. It all went by in a blur, especially during the time of COVID and house arrest, when I wouldn't leave home for weeks on end. Mia thrived once she wasn't confined to drinking milk. She loved her browse, grain, termite dirt, and leaves, and her tummy healed quickly.

Mia & Mardie

She loved being part of the M mob, but was constantly loosing them. she would come to the back door with that pleading look in her eyes, Mummy I lost my mob again, please help me find them. And off we would go……again!!!  She was a petite little girl.

In March 2021 she broke her arm. We are not sure how it happened but she wore her splint with pride and it healed with no further complications.

Mia wasn’t keen on becoming a Mumma, and when she eventually did, after a male courted her for over a month, she became a wonderful Mumma to Mardie. Last year, she lost her little girl Moanna during a mating chase. She was distraught, and we walked together for hours looking for her, but sadly, we never found her. Her Mardie now has a little boy named Mason.

Mia still loves her Mumma's coffee, breakfast, and dinner and has recently been spending more time with me and in the pen. She continues to bring such joy into my life. I see her and smile. She still comes for cuddles, all the while sniffing to see if I have almonds or a banana.

In conclusion, Mia's journey from a fragile pinkie to a thriving joey is a testament to the power of love, dedication, and resilience. Despite the challenges and heartaches, Mia has grown into a joyful, mischievous, and loving kangaroo who continues to bring immense joy to everyone around her. Her story is one of hope and inspiration, showing that with unwavering support and care, even the most delicate lives can flourish. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to her care and supported us along the way. Mia's tale is a beautiful reminder of the profound impact we can have on the lives of these precious animals.
